Woo Hoo, Woo Hoo...We're Healthy Again...

...or at least no one has told us otherwise! All those prayers have worked and our family is feeling much better. Kevin stayed home with both kiddos on Monday. What a special Daddy (see my previous post on him). I called him at lunch time and could tell he was a little tense. Late afternoon he called wanting to know where more juice was at (and I sensed more anxiety). By the time I left work and called to say I'd run buy some more juice, I was hoping he wouldn't run away before I made it home! I arrived and he survived!! Apparently he'd had a really fun day (ha! ha!). He said Mason was fussy "ALL DAY!" Apparently Anna wasn't on her best behavior either. (I think this may have been the longest that he's ever kept both of them at the same time. It was definitely the longest that he's kept them both sick at the same time.) To add more to the story, he said once I got home everyone changed attitudes. He said my arrival was the first time Mason had smiled, laughed or been pleasant all day. (This made my head swell just a little.) We actually had a great evening with both kids being well behaved. I asked Kevin if he would like to be a stay-at-home dad and he said NO WAY! He loves Anna & Mason but being inside all day with two sick kids was enough to make him happy to go to work.

Tuesday Anna returned to school. I kept Mason home for one more day but we were able to go to Wal-Mart and early vote. (Don't forget to VOTE!) I had my mind made up for the Presidential race a long time ago, but while driving to the courthouse I was swayed in another direction. There was a house, not too far from the courthouse, with a big sign in the yard that said "Vote Willie Nelson 4 President!" Wow, now there's a guy for the job!! ha! ha! It did make me laugh though.

Wednesday Mason started his new daycare (Anna's school). We finally have both kids in the same location!! Well, different buildings but the same daycare. Of course I had to take pictures on his first day.

Reading before leaving for the day.

Walking out of the house with Anna to head to daycare together.

Mason is still having a difficult time at drop off each morning but settles down quickly after I leave. They said he's doing really well during the day. He seems so small compared to the other kids in his class, but he is the youngest one. There is a little girl in his class from his former daycare. She's been at the new daycare for about two months. He's even brought home some artwork already!

Wednesday we finally got to return to church after all our sickness. It was so nice to be back in the company of our Christian family. We appreciate all the calls and emails during our absences.

Thursday evening Anna attended one of her friend's/classmate's birthday party at Oogles & Googles. Zoey had a 'Pop Star' party. The girls had makeup applied, dressed up and danced. After dancing they had a Red Carpet walk. Each girl walked down the Red Carpet and had their picture taken. It was a really fun party!

Anna with Zoey to her left.

Saturday we finally made it to Pumpkin Hollow. We had a great time. My previous post is all about that trip. Today was church and lunch at Pizza Inn. I got stung while we were waiting outside for Pizza Inn to open. My are hurts so bad! (It seems like it's always something with me.) I came home, applied Baking Soda paste, took Tylenol and Benedryl. Thankfully Tim & Debby took Anna to the Nature Center today. So I slept off the Benedryl while Mason napped. I'm certain Anna is having a great time.

Pumpkin Hollow

Our family photo from Pumpkin Hollow.

Saturday we had our annual Pumpkin Hollow trip. It was a beautiful day (the wind was just a little cool.) It began with lunch at Strawberry's BBQ in Holcomb, MO. We met Grammy, Aun'tee and Unc for a delicious lunch. (Papaw had to work.) While eating Anna started waving to a little girl and saying "there's Harley". We didn't know "Harley" but learned that Harley goes to the same Pre-K as Anna. She is just in a different class. The girls hugged and talked. What a small world!
Anna runs into friends everywhere. I always laugh and say she has a larger social life than me and Kevin.

After lunch we drove to Pumpkin Hollow. Anna's favorite activity is riding the ponies. Last year she rode a pony named Red. She has talked about Red for the past year. Red was there again this year and of course that is who she rode! We know the owners of Pumpkin Hollow, and Kevin was talking to their son. He made mention of buying Red, but apparently Red isn't for sale. I would love for Anna to have that pony just as much as she'd love to have it. Guess we'll have to find one similar to Red. (Red is priceless due to the $5 per ride that he earns!)

Anna riding Red.

Scarecrow Anna.

Hello from Pumpkin Hollow!

Anna & Mason think Grammy is 'Spooktackular' as the sign states!

Two sweet pumpkins in a pumpkin.

What a beautiful little lady!

A walk down memory lane. This is last year's Pumpkin Hollow visit.

Sick of Sickness

It will come as no surprise that this has been another week of sickness for our family. After my steroid shot last Sunday, I had all kinds of energy. I couldn't sleep Sunday night so I was up at 1:30 a.m. putting photos in albums. Then Anna and I had our Girl's Day on Monday. By Tuesday morning my voice was starting to go. I didn't really feel bad, just sounded bad. We were able to attend Gradyn's birthday party at Pizza Inn Tuesday night. Gradyn is now 5 years old!
The kids had a great time.

Mason had a blast being chased by all the little girls! Here he is running behind a chair trying to "lose" them.

Anna complained off and on all week of a sore throat and headache. My voice continued to worsen and the coughing started but I kept remembering the doctor from Sunday saying "it's viral". So viral equals no treatment. Then Thursday afternoon Mason came home from daycare running fever. It was 102.2 at bedtime. He went to sick call Friday morning and blood work showed it to be viral as well. So no treatment other than finish the antibiotic for his ear infection from last Friday. The doctor (our least favorite one) said his ears were looking better.

Saturday it seemed everyone continued to worsen. Mason woke from a nap around 2:00 and couldn't be consoled. He didn't want to eat or drink, he didn't want to be held and then he wanted to be held, he wanted a toy then he didn't want the toy, nothing could calm him down! We even tried standing outside for a moment (which he normally loves) but that didn't help either. Finally after about 45 minutes of screaming and crying, he started to settle down. We were getting to the point that an ER visit was about to happen. During his "spell" he would occasionally grab at his ears, which according to the doctor (our least favorite doctor) were better. So we gave him Tylenol and used some of the numbing drops for his ears. He barely ate anything the whole day.

My throat worsened throughout Saturday. By late afternoon it felt like my tonsils were swollen to the point of touching. Kevin looked down my throat with the flashlight and said there wasn't much room between them. Anna started saying her throat hurt too. By this time it was too late to go anywhere other than the ER. So we decided to wait it out until morning.

Sunday morning was no better. Mason was fussy, my throat felt horrible, Kevin woke with a bad headache and Anna's throat hurt. We tried holding Mason down to look at his throat but that didn't work. We could hold him down and still but couldn't make him open his mouth. (How do doctors do that?) So I looked at Anna's throat instead. OH YEAH, it still had the cobblestoning but also was developing white patches on it too.

My doctor's office opens at 1:00 on Sunday. The pediatrician's office starts answering their phone at 1:00 on Sunday. So I left in time to get to my doctor at about 10 minutes to 1:00. (Last week I got there at 12:45 and there were already people lined up waiting for the door to open. I can say that's the first time I've ever stood in line to see a doctor.) I got out at 2:10, just in time to meet Kevin and the kids for their 2:30 appointment. Here are our results.

Anna- Strep test was negative BUT she does have blisters developing. The doctor said that the first day of strep will sometimes test negative so he gave her an antibiotic.

Mason- Left ear is still infected. Throat is red too. He got another round of antibiotics.

Me- Still possible viral infection, turned into possible bronchitis and possible strep throat. The doctor said he wouldn't test me for strep since the antibiotic he was prescribing would take care of it if that was a problem. So I got an antibiotic, inhaler and cough medicine.

Walgreens must love us! Hopefully we are on our way to a healthier and happier week!

Oh, and for Kevin- Upon getting home, he said his throat was starting to hurt. I got the flashlight out and yes, he has white spots too. So tomorrow...

(We missed our church's annual Fall Feast today. I had made brownies and peanut butter cookies yesterday to take. After supper Anna was eating a cookie. She looked at me and said "do we get to eat all the cookies now?!!" She found a positive in today's illnesses!)

The Journey of Best Friends

Anna and Katelyn have known each other since birth. Anna was born November 17th and Katelyn was born a couple of weeks later on December 5th. Holly (Katelyn's mom) and I used to worry that they might not be friends. Well, we shouldn't have worried! They are BEST FRIENDS!

Here is the journey of their friendship over the past four (almost five) years.

Blogging

I wish I'd known about blogging when Anna was born. This is such a great way to capture childhood moments. Since I didn't blog five years ago, I'm trying to make some posts that capture the past couple of years.

Girls Day Monday

Anna & I had a girls day today (except for lunch with Kevin). It started with a nice morning at home.
I walked into the living room and found Anna sitting with her stuffed animals watching cartoons.

We went into Jonesboro for lunch with Kevin and then did some shopping. We went to Wal-Mart and strolled through the toy isles. Anna showed me things that she wants for Christmas (which was just about every toy they have). Then we went to the mall where she played on the playground.

Afterward we went to Toy Castle where she picked out even more items for her Christmas Wish List. Then we hit a few more stores including a stroll through Build-A-Bear where they now have a Hannah Montana Bear. She tried every tactic she could come up with to get that bear. I told her that she could take some money from her piggy bank and buy the bear herself. Her reply was "that's too much". So it's okay if it's Mommy & Daddy's money, but if it's her money it's too much! (I see problems in our future.) After our afternoon of shopping we headed home.

Once at home she dressed up and put on a Hannah Montana concert in the living room. She changed outfits several times but I captured this one.

We had such a great day today. I feel guilty because Anna and I don't get to spend much time alone. I know she enjoyed today because when tucking her in to bed tonight she asked if we could do it again tomorrow. I may not have accomplished anything around the house today but my day was a SUCCESS! I can't wait to do it again. I too wish we could do it again tomorrow!

Kevin, A Great Husband, Wonderful Father & Hard Worker

This is a past due & well deserved post to honor Kevin (and in the future show Anna & Mason how much their dad has done for our family). He is my rock, shoulder, best friend and husband. Without him I'd be lost! Our family is so lucky to have a handyman like Kevin. He amazes me at his wealth of knowledge. He can change the oil in our trucks, repair just about anything around the house, build a metal building etc, etc. He does all the outside work at home. It was so funny a few weeks ago. Between being busy at work, rain and other things, the yard hadn't been mowed in a while. One day he told me, in front of Anna, that he knew the yard needed mowed. Anna said "it's okay Daddy". Then a few days later she & Kevin were outside planting our trees. Out of the blue Anna looked at Kevin and said "Daddy, I promise you you need to mow!" We are still laughing over her statement.

Kevin has worked so hard on our land since we bought it a few years ago. I can't even remember all that he's done but a few things are tearing down two old barns/sheds, clearing out the fence line, overseeing dozer & excavator work, buiding our metal shop building (with the help of WONDERFUL friends & family), trenching our water line and installing the pipes, doing everything involved in buying/moving our house onto the land, having electricity, phone lines, etc installed and working, sowing grass seed, bushhogging, planting our trees and on & on.

He has finally finished a project that started about two years ago. Before we moved to our land, we had a lot of dozer work done. There were lots of small trees that we had dozed into three giant piles. Then we moved and other projects took over...like building the shop, having a baby, and just everyday life. A few weeks ago he got the dozer back in action and burned and buried the three giant piles of trees & brush. It really made the place look great!
A look at the progress of our land due to Kevin's hard work...

November 2006- We hadn't bought our land at this point. We were still looking at it. This was a Sunday afternoon and we drove out to look at it again. It was a beautiful fall day & the colors were unbelievable.

Anna drove through the pasture as we looked around and schemed & dreamed.

I snapped this picture of Anna while we were out looking. We ended up using this as our Christmas card that year. It was only later (in January once the purchase was complete) that we told our family where the picture was taken...OUR VERY ON LAND! We were so excited. This was a dream and goal come true.

Kevin checking out the possibilities.

February 2006- Before any dozer and excavator work.

This is along the road frontage prior to having dozer & excavator work done.

Our land is on the right side of the road in this picture. That is now all cleared and we have a driveway with trees now in about the middle section of the picture.

Kevin & Anna watch the dozer at work.

Two small piles that contributed to the large piles of brush recently burned and buried.

This is just one pile of metal that Kevin hauled off our land. The previous owners apparently never threw anything away. They just threw it on the ground. Actually I did play a role in the picking up of metal and other objects. (This was prior to my pregnancy and birth of Mason. Pretty much after getting pregnant, I was done with the physical work. Thanks to Grammy for keeping Anna during our clean up sessions.)

November 2006- The start of a HUGE project, the shop. I really stayed away a lot during this time because I know this was dangerous. Our friend, Ed, still talks about the day Kevin had him lift him up in the front loader of his tractor to do "something" with a beam. I couldn't have watched that and so many other things that happened during this process. I'm thankful to God that I, Anna & Mason still have Kevin and that no one else that helped got hurt either!

December 2006- Time to trench and lay pipe for water to the house and shop.

Kevin installing water lines in the trenches dug by him & Terry T.

The house was moved in and Kevin started building the front deck. You can see him working to the left of the front door.

January 20, 2007- Move in day. I didn't get to take many pictures of moving. Anna woke up sick that morning and I ended up scooting out of the moving and taking her to the doctor. (In my defense, I was 6 months pregnant and had already done more than I should have with packing and preparing. I also did plenty trying to get everything put away.) By the time Anna & I got out of the doctor's office and finished at the pharmacy, everything was loaded in the U-Haul and they were headed to our new home. So Anna & I picked up pizza for the gang. It would really be rude for me to not throw in the names of our moving crew. Papaw, Grammy, Mimi, Uncle Scott, Aunt Debra, Unc & Aun'tee, Paul S. and Chuck P. We had a great crew! Thanks also to Papaw, Grammy, Unc & Aun'tee returning a few days later to clean our old house. Kevin & I went one afternoon to do the final cleaning and it was done. What a surprise & relief!

The disaster in our kitchen after just throwing things in the house.

The nursery furniture went into what is now Mason's room. Anna slept in here (in the toddler bed) until we got her room cleaned out and her new big girl furniture.

This is the reason Anna couldn't stay in her room! There was no place for her & no furniture.

February 1, 2007- The first snow at our new home.

A view from the back of the house down to the pond.

April 2007- An almost finished project. It could hold things but still needed the gutters installed.

I ran into town one day and came home to find my 24 day old son out in the shop with his Daddy. He was snoozing away in his bouncy seat on top of the Skylift used in the building process. (I'm surprised I left him in Kevin's care again after finding this. Amazing how you are more relaxed with the second child!)

The finished product of lots of hard work!

Things have really changed since we moved. Kevin recently planted ten Cleveland Pear trees up our driveway with the help of Anna. They are small so some are hard to see.

Anna & Mason (October 2008)

My plan is to take an a yearly picture of the kids and a tree to show the kids and the trees growth each year.

Kevin, Anna & Mason with a new tree.

As always with our family, it seems that with every good thing comes difficulty too. I have to include this story for memory's sake. Kevin was still working at connecting the water to the house the night prior to moving. It had gotten late and he still hadn't made it home. It always made me nervous when he worked out there at night and especially by himself. Finally he called (like after 9:00 p.m.) and said frantically "I need you to look up the number to Lowe's and find out what time they close." Uh oh, not a good sign. So I did as asked and called him back. He explained that something had broken and flooded the bathroom floor by our bedroom. Okay, panic time. We are moving the next day and our bathroom is flooded and we don't have running water!!!!!! He ran to Lowe's, got the parts he needed and went back to finish the job. Keep in mind that he is working primarily outside, in the dark, in JANUARY! And it was COLD! He also received assistance from Ed and Becky, our dear neighbors and friends, with a shop vac and fans. I don't remember what time he finally made it home but it was well into the next morning hours. Just to get up early and start moving.

That wasn't the end of the story. After picking up the pizzas for the moving crew, I phoned Kevin for something. He informed me that when they got the U-Haul to the new house there was a leak under the house and the water had to be turned off. Okay, panic time again! All our furniture and necessities are on the U-Haul and we don't have water in our house. Kevin had called the place where we purchased our home and a maintance guy was to come out and repair the problem. So the move in continued.

When the U-Haul was about half empty it started sleeting. This was a worry because 1) we had people working from several hours away and 2) we had to get the U-Haul back that evening. Fortunately the sleet didn't last too long and all was well. Everything got moved into the house and then it was time to start finding a place for things. Remember that we still don't have running water. When we needed to use the bathroom, Kevin would go outside and turn the water on for a brief moment so we could flush and wash our hands. We were starting to think the maintance guy wasn't going to come that day and we would have to spend the night elsewhere. Finally right before dark, he got there and solved the problem. So we definitely have some memories from moving into our new home!

Even better than being a hard worker and handy man, Kevin is an awesome father. He loves Anna & Mason so much. Even better (for me) he's a great help with the kids. He can change diapers, give baths, dress the kids, comb hair, prepare a diaper bag (without too many questions), read books, wrestle in the floor, take the kids outside to play, drop them off at daycare, pick them up at daycare, and discipline when needed. I could not make it day to day without all his help. I'm also fortunate that his help doesn't always end with just the kids. When needed he can do a load of laundry (just not our good clothes), load the dishwasher, sweep, vacuum, dust, mop and even do the dreaded cleaning of the bathrooms. I'm a blessed woman! God gave me the best man I could ask for in Kevin!

Kevin is so proud of Anna & Mason. (May 2008)

The kids love 4-wheeler rides with Daddy. (August 2008)

Hopefully in the near future I'll have more of Kevin's hard work to show. If all continues as planned (I'm almost afraid to write about it for fear of making it not happen), this time next year we may be started on our biggest project of all...our new house. We are still completing the house plans and are about ready to meet with an architect to have him draw out the plans. We know that building the house will be lots of hard work and take lots of time. Please pray for our family as we get closer to this project! Once it's done, it will be worth all the hard work. We won't know what to do with all the space we will have. That's one thing about having lived in such a small space for a few years. We will definitely appreciate what we get. But I can't help but think that we will look back on our years in the house trailer as some fond times...times we were cramped but close and cozy! In here you can't be too far away from the rest of the family!

Fun & Not So Fun

Mason turned 18 months on Monday (Oct. 6). It's hard to believe that he is 1 1/2! He had his 18 month checkup on Friday. He weighs 22 lbs. 4 oz and is 31.75 inches long. That puts him in the 17th percentile on weight and 31st percentile for height. So he is slowly making his way up the growth charts. Our pediatrician, Dr. Sneed, is the BEST! She has been our (and Mason's) advocate and supporter during the wild ride we've been on since his birth. She always makes me laugh at Mason's visits when she says "I bet you're stopping at two!" She knows that he has been a challenge (but well worth it!). He's got an excuse for his fussiness for the past week or two. He's had a runny nose (off & on) for a couple of weeks. At his checkup, we found out that both his ears are infected and one "has a blister" (OUCH!). I feel horrible that I didn't realize he was hurting. But he wasn't pulling at his ears or running a temp. All I can say is that he must be one tough boy to not show any signs. Hopefully the numbing drops will help until the antibiotic heals him.

(One day he'll wish I didn't have this picture!)

Anna had a good week. Her school had a visit from some firemen to learn about fire safety. The kids even got to sit in the fire engine. Anna has taught me a lesson they learned "don't hide, go outside". A good lesson to know in case of a house fire. Then Friday "Ranger Rick" came and talked to the kids about bats. So it's been an exciting week for her.

Saturday afternoon we took the kids to the ASU Museum exhibit "Grossology".

Anna is pumping soda into the guy's belly and making him burp. This was her favorite part of the exhibit.

Anna played "Operation" and is removing a femur.

Mason was intrigued by the eyeball in "Grossology".

Today (Sunday) has been less fun. I've had a headache and scratchy throat for a couple of days. I attributed it to sinuses and went on about my business. Then I woke up this morning with a red, matted eye. I was sure it was pink eye and used some old drops we had on hand for Anna. I went ahead and showered and dressed for church (with the plan to just not touch my eye during church to avoid spreading). As I was getting ready I started feeling worse (head, throat, and achy). By the time I was feeding Mason breakfast I realized I wasn't going to make it to church. His cough seemed worse this morning too. Then Anna woke up with a headache and sore throat(before she knew I didn't feel well). So the whole clan stayed home this morning. I went to the doctor and it is pink eye and a viral infection. I got eye drops of my own and a steroid shot. If Anna's not better by tomorrow, she will be next to the doctor. When I went to Walgreens the pharmacist said "Weren't you just in a few days ago with your son?" My reply "Yes, I'm here WEEKLY" (and sometimes daily)! We are excellent customers to Walgreens.

We are really sad because our illnesses made us miss a very important birthday party today...Nathan & Macie's 1st Birthday! We really wanted to go. But I'd rather miss their party than give them pink eye for their 1st birthday!

Happy 1st Birthday, Nathan & Macie!!!

Another Week

We celebrated Kevin's birthday Monday evening at Mimi's house. She cooked a huge supper...roast, carrots, mashed 'tator and gravy, mac & cheese, green bean casserole, and birthday cake. It was YUMMY! (Much better than a frozen pizza or other quick meal that I'd put together.) After eating we went outside and enjoyed the cooler temperature. Anna rode her bike and Mason rode in the wagon. Then Annna & Mason started playing in the yard. Anna was pretending that she was doing a flip so I tried to help her do a cartwheel. I couldn't make her understand how to do it by just telling her. So I finally gave it a try. The first couple didn't even come close to a cartwheel but I finally did one well enough that she understood what it should look like. Kevin even did one too. We must be getting old because after the first cartwheel each of us saw stars!

The Birthday Boy & his sidekicks

Thursday afternoon I had a wisdom tooth pulled. According to my dentist the tooth had broke through my gum just a tiny bit. The way it was sitting it wouldn't be able to come through so it had to come out. It wasn't as bad as I remembered (I had one pulled about 15 years ago). To me the worst part is the feeling of numbness. When I left the dentist my nose & eye on the right side even felt numb. It's still a little sore but not bad.

Mason spent Friday night with Papaw and Grammy. Then ran around with Grammy on Saturday. Anna attended a birthday party for a classmate at Pump It Up on Saturday. I guess she was practicing for her party in November. We scheduled her party at Pump It Up about three months ago and already knew the theme was Hannah Montana 'Pumpin Up the Party' at Pump It Up! I know that is shocking news that she would want a Hannah Montana party!! (Has anyone seen any Hannah Montana wrapping paper? I can find gift bags but no wrapping paper.)

Today Anna is having the time of her life with her best friend, Katelyn. Anna went home with Katelyn after church & lunch at TaMolly's. I'm certain the girls are having a blast but I'm not so sure about Holly & Brian...they are awfully brave to tackle the two of them on top of twins. But I'm thankful to them because I took a two hour nap when Mason took his!
