This is a past due & well deserved post to honor Kevin (and in the future show Anna & Mason how much their dad has done for our family). He is my rock, shoulder, best friend and husband. Without him I'd be lost! Our family is so lucky to have a handyman like Kevin. He amazes me at his wealth of knowledge. He can change the oil in our trucks, repair just about anything around the house, build a metal building etc, etc. He does all the outside work at home. It was so funny a few weeks ago. Between being busy at work, rain and other things, the yard hadn't been mowed in a while. One day he told me, in front of Anna, that he knew the yard needed mowed. Anna said "it's okay Daddy". Then a few days later she & Kevin were outside planting our trees. Out of the blue Anna looked at Kevin and said "Daddy, I promise you you need to mow!" We are still laughing over her statement.
Kevin has worked so hard on our land since we bought it a few years ago. I can't even remember all that he's done but a few things are tearing down two old barns/sheds, clearing out the fence line, overseeing dozer & excavator work, buiding our metal shop building (with the help of WONDERFUL friends & family), trenching our water line and installing the pipes, doing everything involved in buying/moving our house onto the land, having electricity, phone lines, etc installed and working, sowing grass seed, bushhogging, planting our trees and on & on.
He has finally finished a project that started about two years ago. Before we moved to our land, we had a lot of dozer work done. There were lots of small trees that we had dozed into three giant piles. Then we moved and other projects took over...like building the shop, having a baby, and just everyday life. A few weeks ago he got the dozer back in action and burned and buried the three giant piles of trees & brush. It really made the place look great!
A look at the progress of our land due to Kevin's hard work...
November 2006- We hadn't bought our land at this point. We were still looking at it. This was a Sunday afternoon and we drove out to look at it again. It was a beautiful fall day & the colors were unbelievable.
Anna drove through the pasture as we looked around and schemed & dreamed.
I snapped this picture of Anna while we were out looking. We ended up using this as our Christmas card that year. It was only later (in January once the purchase was complete) that we told our family where the picture was taken...OUR VERY ON LAND! We were so excited. This was a dream and goal come true.
Kevin checking out the possibilities.
February 2006- Before any dozer and excavator work.
This is along the road frontage prior to having dozer & excavator work done.
Our land is on the right side of the road in this picture. That is now all cleared and we have a driveway with trees now in about the middle section of the picture.
Kevin & Anna watch the dozer at work.
Two small piles that contributed to the large piles of brush recently burned and buried.
This is just one pile of metal that Kevin hauled off our land. The previous owners apparently never threw anything away. They just threw it on the ground. Actually I did play a role in the picking up of metal and other objects. (This was prior to my pregnancy and birth of Mason. Pretty much after getting pregnant, I was done with the physical work. Thanks to Grammy for keeping Anna during our clean up sessions.)
November 2006- The start of a HUGE project, the shop. I really stayed away a lot during this time because I know this was dangerous. Our friend, Ed, still talks about the day Kevin had him lift him up in the front loader of his tractor to do "something" with a beam. I couldn't have watched that and so many other things that happened during this process. I'm thankful to God that I, Anna & Mason still have Kevin and that no one else that helped got hurt either!

December 2006- Time to trench and lay pipe for water to the house and shop.
Kevin installing water lines in the trenches dug by him & Terry T.

The house was moved in and Kevin started building the front deck. You can see him working to the left of the front door.
January 20, 2007- Move in day. I didn't get to take many pictures of moving. Anna woke up sick that morning and I ended up scooting out of the moving and taking her to the doctor. (In my defense, I was 6 months pregnant and had already done more than I should have with packing and preparing. I also did plenty trying to get everything put away.) By the time Anna & I got out of the doctor's office and finished at the pharmacy, everything was loaded in the U-Haul and they were headed to our new home. So Anna & I picked up pizza for the gang. It would really be rude for me to not throw in the names of our moving crew. Papaw, Grammy, Mimi, Uncle Scott, Aunt Debra, Unc & Aun'tee, Paul S. and Chuck P. We had a great crew! Thanks also to Papaw, Grammy, Unc & Aun'tee returning a few days later to clean our old house. Kevin & I went one afternoon to do the final cleaning and it was done. What a surprise & relief!
The disaster in our kitchen after just throwing things in the house.

The nursery furniture went into what is now Mason's room. Anna slept in here (in the toddler bed) until we got her room cleaned out and her new big girl furniture.
This is the reason Anna couldn't stay in her room! There was no place for her & no furniture.
February 1, 2007- The first snow at our new home.

A view from the back of the house down to the pond.
April 2007- An almost finished project. It could hold things but still needed the gutters installed.

I ran into town one day and came home to find my 24 day old son out in the shop with his Daddy. He was snoozing away in his bouncy seat on top of the Skylift used in the building process. (I'm surprised I left him in Kevin's care again after finding this. Amazing how you are more relaxed with the second child!)

The finished product of lots of hard work!
Things have really changed since we moved. Kevin recently planted ten Cleveland Pear trees up our driveway with the help of Anna. They are small so some are hard to see.

My plan is to take an a yearly picture of the kids and a tree to show the kids and the trees growth each year.

As always with our family, it seems that with every good thing comes difficulty too. I have to include this story for memory's sake. Kevin was still working at connecting the water to the house the night prior to moving. It had gotten late and he still hadn't made it home. It always made me nervous when he worked out there at night and especially by himself. Finally he called (like after 9:00 p.m.) and said frantically "I need you to look up the number to Lowe's and find out what time they close." Uh oh, not a good sign. So I did as asked and called him back. He explained that something had broken and flooded the bathroom floor by our bedroom. Okay, panic time. We are moving the next day and our bathroom is flooded and we don't have running water!!!!!! He ran to Lowe's, got the parts he needed and went back to finish the job. Keep in mind that he is working primarily outside, in the dark, in JANUARY! And it was COLD! He also received assistance from Ed and Becky, our dear neighbors and friends, with a shop vac and fans. I don't remember what time he finally made it home but it was well into the next morning hours. Just to get up early and start moving.
That wasn't the end of the story. After picking up the pizzas for the moving crew, I phoned Kevin for something. He informed me that when they got the U-Haul to the new house there was a leak under the house and the water had to be turned off. Okay, panic time again! All our furniture and necessities are on the U-Haul and we don't have water in our house. Kevin had called the place where we purchased our home and a maintance guy was to come out and repair the problem. So the move in continued.
When the U-Haul was about half empty it started sleeting. This was a worry because 1) we had people working from several hours away and 2) we had to get the U-Haul back that evening. Fortunately the sleet didn't last too long and all was well. Everything got moved into the house and then it was time to start finding a place for things. Remember that we still don't have running water. When we needed to use the bathroom, Kevin would go outside and turn the water on for a brief moment so we could flush and wash our hands. We were starting to think the maintance guy wasn't going to come that day and we would have to spend the night elsewhere. Finally right before dark, he got there and solved the problem. So we definitely have some memories from moving into our new home!
Even better than being a hard worker and handy man, Kevin is an awesome father. He loves Anna & Mason so much. Even better (for me) he's a great help with the kids. He can change diapers, give baths, dress the kids, comb hair, prepare a diaper bag (without too many questions), read books, wrestle in the floor, take the kids outside to play, drop them off at daycare, pick them up at daycare, and discipline when needed. I could not make it day to day without all his help. I'm also fortunate that his help doesn't always end with just the kids. When needed he can do a load of laundry (just not our good clothes), load the dishwasher, sweep, vacuum, dust, mop and even do the dreaded cleaning of the bathrooms. I'm a blessed woman! God gave me the best man I could ask for in Kevin!

Hopefully in the near future I'll have more of Kevin's hard work to show. If all continues as planned (I'm almost afraid to write about it for fear of making it not happen), this time next year we may be started on our biggest project of all...our new house. We are still completing the house plans and are about ready to meet with an architect to have him draw out the plans. We know that building the house will be lots of hard work and take lots of time. Please pray for our family as we get closer to this project! Once it's done, it will be worth all the hard work. We won't know what to do with all the space we will have. That's one thing about having lived in such a small space for a few years. We will definitely appreciate what we get. But I can't help but think that we will look back on our years in the house trailer as some fond times...times we were cramped but close and cozy! In here you can't be too far away from the rest of the family!
